Sichuan pepper alternative


Sichuan/ Szechuan pepper is a dried aromatic peppery berry used in Chinese cooking - most specifically in the Szechuan region.

If you are unable to source this from a supermarket, try an Oriental supplier.

You could try adding ground black pepper, or chillies, to give a similar heat - although it is difficult to re-create the 'hot and numbing' flavour of this special ingredient.
